  3. The "uu" file format is used to transmit binary files through
  4. electronic mail.  It was originally developed for transmission of
  5. binary files between Unix machines (UU stands for Unix to Unix), but
  6. now is commonly used for all sorts of machines.
  7.  
  8. A uu format file consists of only text characters that are visible to
  9. people and that can be safely sent in electronic mail.  Binary files
  10. have all sorts of invisible characters that won't get through
  11. electronic mail.  Because the uu format file is restricted to using
  12. only text characters, the uu format file will be larger than the
  13. binary file from which it was generated.

  15. * HOW TO DECODE A "UU" FILE

  17. Let's say you have a uuencoded file and want to produce the original
  18. binary from it.  You might have downloaded this uuencoded file to
  19. your PC using a terminal program that is capable of saving text to a
  20. file.  The file should look something like this:

  28. The details may be different, but the file should start with "begin"
  29. and finish with "end".

  32. uuencoded information for "filename"):

  36. Uudecode will put the decoded binary file on your disk.

  38. * HOW TO ENCODE A BINARY FILE INTO A "UU" FILE

  40. Let's say you have a binary file "page1.lwr" that you want to change
  41. into a "UU" file called "page1.uu".  Simply type the following:

  43. uuencode page1.lwr page1.lwr > page1.uu
  44.  
  45. (Yes, you have to type the original filename twice.)
  46.  
  47. When you're done, you'll have a text file (page1.uu in this example)
  48. that you can send as electronic mail (perhaps using a terminal
  49. program which allows you to insert the text from a file).
